Nylon Particle Powders
Nylon Particle Powders for creating complex impact resistant high accuracy parts. This material is used in the SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) method.
Nylon Powders are most commonly used for SLS 3D printing. The polyamide powder produces strong and durable parts that do not need support structures.
Safety measures required when handling this powder. It is essential to wear your Personal protective equipment (commonly referred to as PPE: Goggles, Gloves, dust mask) per guidelines of the Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
If powder comes into contact with your skin, wash it off immediately with cold water and soap. Adhesive tape can also be used to mechanically pull away any Nylon Powder after washing.
Inhalation of nylon powder should be avoided. The fine particles are about 40 microns in diameter (78 microns in average). You would experience the same "acute" reaction as you would get from breathing-in fine sand, or any other nonreactive dust of similar particulate size. A study found that the particles from the powder may cause respiratory and cardiovascular disruptions including asthma and lung cancer to the SLS 3D printing operators. Therefore, a N95 mask or other equivalent respiratory protection is absolutely essential. |
In post-production (after the SLS 3D printing has completed) the most important process is to use compressed air to remove the unused powder from your piece, but it can be challenging in some model geometries, as they may trap some powder further. The entire post-printing tasks can be a potential source of nylon dust concentration, especially the recycling of unused powder with fresh powder (based on the manufacture recommend fresh rate).
Nylon is a synthetic thermoplastic material with amazing weathering properties, sunlight resistance, and it is at a higher melting point. It can easily be dyed, molded and machined, with SLS 3D printing the nylon final piece is precise, durable, lightweight but a porous product. Nylon powder can also be combined with other materials such as glass, carbon fiber to form a composite material with improved characteristics such as fire-retardant and toughness.
